Assynt Landscape Photography | Northwest Scotland
Assynt is one of the wildest and most atmospheric landscapes in northwest Scotland, and a place I keep returning to with a camera. From the distinctive shape of Suilven and the sandstone peaks of Stac Pollaidh to the mountains around Quinag, Loch Assynt and the rugged coastline, the landscape offers an incredible variety of photographic opportunities.
What draws me back to Assynt isn't simply the mountains themselves, but the way the landscape changes with the weather and the light. Mist can transform the hills, low cloud can reveal and conceal the peaks, while breaks in the weather can create those fleeting moments of light that I’m always looking for.
This collection of Assynt landscape photography brings together some of my favourite images from this remarkable part of Scotland. My approach is less about simply recording a location and more about capturing the atmosphere and character of the landscape when the conditions come together.
For me, Assynt is a perfect example of why landscape photography is really about chasing the light rather than simply chasing the location.

Photographing Assynt
Assynt is a landscape that rewards patience. The weather can change quickly, and some of the most memorable conditions can appear when the forecast looks far from perfect. That unpredictability is part of what makes photographing this part of Scotland so rewarding.
I’m particularly drawn to the combination of dramatic mountains, open moorland, lochs and changing weather. Locations such as Suilven, Stac Pollaidh, Quinag and Loch Assynt all have their own character, but it is often the fleeting light between the weather that makes an image.
